Inspired by the London 2012 Olympics’ legacy of diversity and inclusion we began a journey to explore some of the key issues impacting the UK workforce.

Our role at the heart of the UK’s employment industry gave us the ability to conduct research and hold round table discussions with major employers and interested bodies in the UK, including our partners Deloitte and Cisco.

Urgent action needed to realise the full potential of Britain’s workforce

Skills play an essential role in driving Britain’s economic recovery and are the single most important factor that will keep the workforce competitive in the global economy. But, employers say the gulf between the skills they need and the skills of people entering the workforce is widening. Education is failing both employers and jobseekers. Now, more than ever, we need urgent action to realise the full potential of the workforce.

People are entering the workforce with a lack of skills. School pupils have little exposure to the career opportunities available and there is little collaboration between government, education, employers and parents. Work experience is often based on ‘who people know’ making it completely unrelated to the discovery of a long term career.

All Adecco Group UK & Ireland employees have spent a day a year in schools to provide career advice. They’ve also given pupils help to write their CVs, training on how to perform well in an interview, share what it’s like to work in a modern work environment and explain employers’ expectations of new recruits.
